Members of the Canberra Calligraphy Society are passionate about the beauty of letters; their works will illustrate older, traditional scripts used in pre-printing years, modern scripts and artistic ways of interpreting words.

Paul Johnson – A Suitcase Full of Pop-Up Books Talk

CANBERRA CRAFT BOOKBINDERS’ GUILD

 FRIDAY, 18 MARCH 2011  AT 7.30 PM

WODEN COMMUNITY CENTRE, CANBERRA

The Guild is sponsoring a talk by Paul Johnson, internationally known UK book artist and educator.  The Committee hope that as many members as possible will attend Paul’s talk.  His talks are known to be entertaining and informative.

He will be speaking about the power of the book as an aesthetic and architectural form.  He will discuss its fascination for both children and adults as he pulls a library’s worth of pop-up books out of a single suitcase.

Paul is internationally recognized as a paper and book artist and regularly teaches and exhibits in the UK and the US.  He is equally well known for his pioneering work in developing literacy through the book arts.  He is author of numerous books including A Book of One’s Own, Literacy through the Books Arts and Pictures and Words Together.  His present trip includes workshops in Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart and Orange and he will be speaking to teachers’ groups at Wollongong University and in Tasmania.

His movable books are in the collections of the Tate, Cooper-Hewett Museum in New York, the National Gallery, the Library of Congress, the University of California at Berkeley and Yale University, among other institutions. His work was selected for Stand and Deliver – an exhibition of editioned movable books which recently toured the USA.  He exhibits widely and is on the UK Craft Council’s select list of British  designer-makers.

Paul will have many of his editioned books at the talk as well as some of his books on developing literacy.  Anyone wanting more information on his editioned books or his books on literacy should go to www.bookart.co.uk.
